Where to thrift in Iowa City and Coralville

Jump to stores & map ↓

Start with the kind of shopping you want to do. For donated-goods thrift, compare Goodwill and Crowded Closet. For clothing resale, choose Stuff Etc, The Second Act or the Coralville buy-sell stores. For vintage, start downtown or on the south side. The map below includes all of these; the shortlists group selected stops for a manageable trip.

Trips awaiting confirmed visit details (1)

These suggested trips are not active because one or more stops need confirmed shopping hours or visit access. Their shop profiles remain available in the local directory; confirm each stop before making your own trip.

Donated-goods thrift on Highway 6

Goodwill at 445 Highway 6 East and Crowded Closet at 851 Highway 6 East give you two thrift stops without crossing into Coralville. Stuff Etc is in a separate suite at Crowded Closet’s address, but it is consignment rather than donated-goods thrift. Compare the store models as well as the locations.

Downtown & the south side

Keep Artifacts and Revival as a downtown pair, or head south for Vice on East Prentiss, Ulysses Modern and SweetLivin’ on South Gilbert, and Wonderland on Highland Court. The south-side shortlist crosses several streets; check directions and parking rather than treating it as one shopping block.

Highway 6 & Olympic Court

Crowded Closet and Stuff Etc occupy separate suites at 851 Highway 6 East. The Second Act on Olympic Court adds a clothing consignment stop; use its address and directions instead of assuming all three shops share the same center.

Coralville resale

Plato’s Closet at 1801 Second Street and Once Upon A Child at 881 22nd Avenue give you a clothing-focused pair. The Plato’s Closet branch is branded Iowa City, but both addresses are in Coralville. These are buy-sell resale shops; check branch intake rules before bringing items.

2 stops

Iowa City donated-goods thrift

Pair Goodwill on Highway 6 with Crowded Closet. Start with the categories you sell, inspect condition and compare sold listings before setting a buying limit. Add Stuff Etc separately if you also want consignment inventory.

  1. Goodwill Store – Iowa City, IA445 Highway 6 E, Iowa City, IA 52240
  2. Crowded Closet – Iowa City, IA851 Hwy 6 E, Ste 101, Iowa City, IA 52240

Crowded Closet publishes Monday–Friday 9:30am–5pm and Saturday 9:30am–4pm; it is closed Sunday. Check Goodwill’s current branch hours and holiday exceptions before leaving. This shortlist does not check opening hours automatically.

Downtown vintage & clothing

Compare Artifacts’ mix of vintage and collectibles with Revival’s clothing selection. Look closely at labels, fabric and condition; a curated retail price does not automatically leave room for a resale profit.

  1. Artifacts – Iowa City, IA331 E Market St, Iowa City, IA 52245
  2. Revival - Iowa City, IA117 E College St, Iowa City, IA 52240

Both publish weekend hours. On Sunday, Revival lists 11am–4pm and Artifacts 10am–5pm, so put Revival first if starting later. Confirm special hours.

  1. Plato’s Closet - Coralville, IA1801 2nd St, Coralville, IA 52241
  2. Once Upon A Child - Coralville, IA881 22nd Ave, Coralville, IA 52241

Before you buy or bring items in

For a buying checklist rather than another store list, read Iowa City thrifting: what to check before you buy. It covers clothing inspection, sold-price research and recording the facts you need for a listing.

Separate shopping from selling or donating. Crowded Closet publishes distinct donation hours. For consignment, read the individual shop’s intake process before loading your car; a store being open does not mean it can accept your items.

For clothing, inspect closures, seams, stains, fabric wear and measurements. For household goods, check completeness and packing costs. Use the sourcing checklist and profit calculator to include fees, shipping, supplies and the amount of work a purchase needs.

If you want to extend the day north, use the Cedar Rapids and Marion guide. Treat that as a separate driving segment and check closing times before adding it to an Iowa City trip.

The south-side shops are different businesses with different specialties. At SweetLivin’, online photographs are not a live inventory guarantee and the listed phone accepts calls, not texts. Call about a specific item before making it the reason for a trip.

Before a clothing-focused trip, use That Couple Flips’ men’s jeans research guide and button-up tag-reading checklist. Watch the linked videos for item research: men’s jeans and button-up shirts. These explain clothing research; they are not reviews of the local shops.

Practical questions for this trip

Where can I compare consignment stores in Iowa City and Coralville?

Start with Stuff Etc Iowa City and The Second Act for consignment, then use Stuff Etc Coralville as a separate Coralville stop. Plato’s Closet and Once Upon A Child use direct-buy resale models. Choose by clothing category and location; shopping access does not establish consignor intake availability.

Are Stuff Etc Iowa City and Crowded Closet the same thrift store?

No. They are separate businesses at 851 Highway 6 East: Crowded Closet sells donated goods, while Stuff Etc is consignment. Stuff Etc’s operator identifies suite 103. Compare the actual item and price rather than treating every secondhand shop as the same format. Stuff Etc branch source.

Where can I find thrift stores rather than consignment shops?

Use the Thrift shops layer on the local map. The Iowa City donated-goods shortlist pairs Goodwill on Highway 6 and Crowded Closet. Coralville Goodwill is a separate location. Stuff Etc, The Second Act, Plato’s Closet and Once Upon A Child use different resale or consignment models.

Which shortlists can work on Sunday?

The downtown pair and Coralville pair have published Sunday hours, subject to exceptions. The full Highway 6 trip does not because Crowded Closet is closed Sunday. The full south-side trip does not because SweetLivin’ is closed Sunday. Remove closed stops and confirm the remaining shops before traveling.

Does this guide cover North Liberty?

The current local map filters to Iowa City and Coralville. North Liberty coverage is still incomplete. Older business mentions alone are not enough to recommend a current physical shop.

Will these shortlists replace my saved trip?

Opening one shows a proposed trip. Use the shortlist controls to save or add the stops, then reorder or remove them. The suggested order is not a timed or optimized route.

Are all secondhand items returnable?

Policies vary by shop and item type. Ask before buying, especially for resale clothing, electronics or an item that needs testing. A return policy for new merchandise may not apply to used inventory.

FROM SOURCING TO SELLING

Choose a category before crossing town

Separate downtown from the corridor

Choose downtown vintage, the Highway 6 thrift-and-consignment group, south-side vintage and records, or Coralville clothing resale. The shortlists give you starting points with individual profiles; do not assume all four groups fit into one compact trip.

Research within the right category

A curated vintage garment, everyday clothing and a record need different comparable sales and inspection steps. Check the exact version, condition and delivered sold price. Use clothing research for clothing; do not carry its assumptions into antiques or records.

Turn research notes into listing facts

Photograph the identifying tag or model and record flaws when you inspect the item. Keep cost, measurements and a storage reference together through photography and draft review. Useful evidence is easier to capture now than reconstruct after the trip.

Keep planning with the free profit calculator, condition-notes guide and printable sourcing checklist. Clothing sellers can also use the research library before buying.
