Used Shoes and Boots for Resale: Match the Model and Inspect the Pair
Use two historical footwear sales to build a model, size, sole and condition checklist before buying used shoes or boots.
Research the pair, not just the logo. The model, tagged size, wear and completeness determine whether a used pair belongs in the same comparison group as a promising sold listing. Check both shoes before spending time on the price.
Two specific sales, not two brand-wide promises
In the December 5, 2025 That Couple Flips video, Matt reported selling women’s Ariat Anthem boots, size 7.5, for $76 in about two days. In the November 8, 2025 video, Rothy’s The Loafer, also size 7.5, reportedly sold for $76 in about two days. Those matching prices do not mean the two brands have the same resale value. Each result belongs to one particular pair.
A separate Ariat pair in the November video sold, came back as a return, and sold again for $75. That is one pair finding another buyer, not $150 of retained sales. Build your sourcing notes around completed outcomes and include return costs when reviewing your own results.
Confirm that it really is a pair
- Compare the model and size markings in both shoes. Read the size system and any width designation.
- Compare color, materials, outsole design and visible construction. A mismatched replacement can be easy to overlook.
- Check included insoles, laces, buckles, zippers and removable accessories.
- Photograph the markings while you have good light. Keep model identification separate from an authenticity claim.
A search result that looks similar is a lead. Confirm it against the pair’s labels and construction. Do not turn an uncertain match into an exact model name or an unsupported waterproof claim. When you cannot establish the model, widen the comparison honestly and lower your confidence in the purchase.
Inspect underneath and inside
Look at the outsole tread, heel wear, sole edges, toe bends, interior heel lining and insoles. Check for visible cracks, crumbling, separation, sticky surfaces, loose stitching and damaged fasteners. Inspect both shoes; the worse one sets the condition you need to disclose.
A clean upper does not tell you how the sole will perform in wear. Visible inspection cannot guarantee remaining life. Pass on deterioration or problems you cannot evaluate within your skills. Do not describe footwear as restored or fully tested after a quick wipe and a glance.
For boots, open every zipper and inspect the shafts, heel counters and seams. Note worn lining and odors. For flats, inspect the toe edge, heel interior and areas where the upper meets the sole. Plan useful close-up photos rather than hiding wear behind a flattering top-down image.
Compare the right size and condition
Search the exact model and size when possible, then review nearby sizes only as additional context. Keep different widths and men’s/women’s sizing separate. Exclude new examples from a used-price estimate and do not treat a pristine pair as a direct comp for heavy heel wear.
Check what buyers paid with shipping, not only the item-price headline. Your shipping cost depends on the packed pair, box and destination. An attractive sale price can disappear into postage and preparation if you guess those costs.
Make the purchase earn its space
Write down the model evidence, size, defects, expected sale range and packed shipping estimate. Use a conservative outcome in your calculator. If the plan depends on a perfect cleaning result, a premium sale or zero returns, leave more room in the purchase price—or leave the pair.
For the eventual listing, use the platform’s current condition options and show the wear you found. eBay’s condition guide explains that the available definitions vary by category. Choose the applicable option and describe the actual pair.
